This year in Global History, we will be working together to better understand the events, ideas, and individuals that created our modern world. That means that we need to start by better understanding the modern world. That is our first goal.
So lets start with two facts:
1)We live in a world of nations, shaped by geography and history.
2) We live in a world of scarcity and inequality.
In this project, your group will be assigned a nation.
Refer to this doc to see what nation you are working on!
Task 1) This week, Your group’s first job is to understand the physical features of this country, and how it may have affected the history of the country. Use the atlas and Wikipedia for this task.
Task 2) what makes that nation a nation. Is it culture, language, history, or all three? And what is the role of geography in shaping this nation? Use wikipedia or another site to find out.
Task 3) Your third job is to determine the “level of development” of that nation. To do that, you will work with developmental indicators at the World bank, like Life Expectancy, Literacy Rate, Infant Mortality, and per capita income. You will then explain with photos and words what these numbers tell us about life in that country.
Task 3) Your fourth job is to understand economic inequality. Where does your group’s nation rank next to others in this class? Use Gapminder to find out!
Task 4) And finally, your job is to wrap all this important information up into a Google Presentation, using Google Docs. And then, share it with the class!
Final product: Each group will use their Google Presentation to make a 3-5 minute presentation to our class on September 26-27.
Criteria:
Each Google Presentation must have:
- information on two national characteristics
- flag of the nation
- map of the nation or region, one physical. You choose the other one.
- 3 developmental indicators, each with explanations--what does they mean?
- 2 photos of life in that country (based on indicators)
- At least one Gapminder Chart to see where your country ranks.
- Conclusion: What did you learn in this project, and what are 2 questions that you still have about these nations?
- And each must be presented to the class in English or Spanish.
